Weekly Update - 9th December

Round 9 wrapped up over the weekend, and we’ve got all the results and match reports ready for you! Catch up on the highlights and standout performances from both our junior and senior teams.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn’t on our side, and many of the weekend’s games were washed out.

This concludes T1 and T2 games for the first half of the season—they’ll be back for their first match on 1st February 2025. Keep an eye on your team chat groups to find out when training will resume in the new year.

On a less positive note, we regret to share that we were broken into again at Endeavour Park. Drinks were taken, graffiti was left behind, and locks were damaged. Please keep an eye out for any suspicious activity around the grounds.

Looking for Christmas gift ideas? We’ve got Rovers kit bags ($170), backpacks ($60), and stubby coolers ($10) in stock! To purchase, email committee@roverscc.com.au or see Sim North at junior training on Wednesday.

Finally, on behalf of Rovers Cricket Club, we’d like to wish all of our players, families, and supporters a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy holiday season. Thank you for being part of the Rovers family—we look forward to seeing you in the new year!

Enjoy your week, and happy reading!

JUNIOR RESULTS – ROUND 9

TIER 3 – Halpin Partners Rovers V Mulgrave – Washed out
TIER 3 – Super Global Services Rovers V Norths – washed out
TIER 2 – Rovers Red (6-185) v Cassowary Coast (1-126)

On a very wet weekend Rovers Red found some blue sky down at the beautiful Kurrimine Beach against a revved up Cassowary Coast who were coming off a 150 run flogging to Mulgrave last week.

Our Redmen won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that I’m sure the home team didn’t mind at all as there opening bowler went to work on a damp astro pitch taking two wickets with the first two balls of the match.  Rovers Red, 2/0 after just two balls.  Our ever dependable middle order however went to work rectifying the situation and at the first drinks break we had recovered to 3/41 – things were looking up thanks to the in form Tommy (22 off 35).

From here, Eli and Mitch kept the score board ticking over nicely, both retiring with handy contributions of 39* and 19* respectively taking the score to a very handy 3/96 in the 16th over.  Things were looking up for the men in Green and when Wil decided our worm wasn’t standing up straight enough he belted 42 from just 20 balls with a fantastic display of power hitting catapulting the score to 158 in the space of just six overs leaving the locals wishing the heavens would open up and just wash the match out.  Instead, they found themselves chasing a 186 for victory.

Our bowlers kept things tight for the duration of the innings and although Cass Coast were 0/62 at the first break we new that if we held our nerve with the ball, we would be able to mount some pressure and steal the win.  The boys produced perhaps our tightest display of bowling across the next 20 overs restricting the batting team to just 126.  Stand out bowlers were Jake 1/5, Trav 0/1, Wil 0/9  and Cooper 0/10 off each of their three overs.

Players of the match were Wil, Eli, Trav and Jake.

TIER 2 – Rovers Green V Atherton White – Washed out
TIER 2 – Rovers Gold (6-120) V Norths (6-171)

We lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a steamy Cairns Saturday afternoon. Hugh (35*) and Ashton (16) got us off to a bright start against a disciplined Norths bowling attack.  Unfortunately we lost wickets in the middle overs just when we were ready to up the ante.  Neil’s 15 not out was next best as we set a reasonable target after our 30 overs.

Despite some excellent opening overs from Hugh and Elijah the Norths openers set out in ernest for out total and despite some wonderful catches from the Blake brothers, we were always on the back foot.  Neil was the best of our bowlers – 2-26 whilst Riley was economical with 1-9.

Congratulations to Norths for their win but of course the Rovers crew never gave up.

Our awards this week went to Elijah (for his spectacular catch! Ashton for his disciplined batting and neat wicket keeping and Riley for his tidy spell.

TIER 1 – Rovers Gold (0-191) V Norths (0-86)

After a nail biting 1 run victory when these two teams met earlier this season Rovers Gold showed up charged and ready to go. Gold won the toss, electing to bowl in soggy conditions. The entire team bowled fantastically with an outstanding all team effort in the field to back this up restricting Norths to 86 runs and managing to take 11 wickets. Although it is hard to pick a stand out, Cooper H finished with figures of 2 for 5 off 3 overs and Teddy was involved in two outstanding run outs.

Our turn to bat. Isaak got us off to a flyer with 31 runs off 15 balls (allegedly earning him an extra $5 from his father). The team continued the momentum in the middle stages with Kitty and Brianna both rock solid against some excellent Norths bowling. The final stages Cooper L played his best innings of the year scoring 29 off 15. Final score Gold 191 to Norths 86.

Awards today went to Cooper H, Isaak and Brad and as a special bonus the whole team were presented with team personalised calendars courtesy of Pa and Ma. A special thanks to all our Gold parents for your help and support this first half of the season. Can’t wait to see what our Golds can achieve in the new year.

TIER 1 – Rovers Green (0-163) V Norths (0-182)
TIER 1 – Rovers Red (121) V Norths (109)

After a week of heavy rain it was great to get a full game of cricket in before Xmas.  Captain Morgun lost the toss and we were sent in to bat in slippery conditions.  Our innings stuttered along until Jacob (27) played his best innings of cricket with a number of crisp boundaries.  He was well supported by Aadit 19.

When it our turn to field our all round skills were on show – with a number of run out effected and Jacob taking 2 sharp catches.  The pick of our bowlers were Aadit 2-8, Ryan 2-21, Shenuka 1-9 and Morgun 1-11.

At the end of the 20 overs scores were level but our superior wicket tally meant a tight Redbacks win!

Winning is not everything of course, but it was noted that we lost heavily to this opposition earlier in the season – evidence of just how much the Redbacks have improved so far.

A big thank you to Bronte who was a great sport and played for Norths to ensure they had a full team.

SENIOR RESULTS

1st Grade – Twomey Schriber Rovers (100) V Mareeba (8-104)
2nd Grade – Red Beret Hotel Rovers (110) V Mulgrave (144)

The clouds cleared to allow the mighty 2s to take to the hallowed cazalys turf.  Unfortunately we didn’t quite capitalise on our chances to give Aaron Lock a win in his 200th.

Things started well with Ian De Lang channeling his inner Mitchell Starc and snagging an LBW on the first ball of the Mulgrave innings.  Skipper Sauce also grabbed an early wicket and we seemed to have the momentum.  To Mulgrave’s credit they hung tough in the middle overs and showed more patience with the bat in hand than we would later in the day.  Joel Sykes bowled a tight spell and grabbed 2 wickets, as did Stuart Prest (that is not a typo) and Taidgh. An honourable mention to Cody Peter’s who also provided a tight spell.

When it came our turn to bat we thought 140ish was attainable but stumbled as we lost early wickets. Despite the best efforts of Presty (27) and a mature innings from Cody in the middle order we fell well short.

No panic stations for the mighty 2s but a reminder that we need to bring our “A” game each and every week in what is proving to be a tight competition.

3rd Grade – FGF Rovers V Mulgrave – Washed Out
3rd Grade – Bhutanese Rovers V Mareeba – Washed out
