Weekly Update 9th March

Welcome to this week’s Rovers update.

As the home and away season wraps up for our senior teams, Tier 3 and CPL sides, it has been another strong year for Rovers Cricket Club with plenty to celebrate across the grades.

Congratulations to the Red Beret Rovers 2nd Grade side who finished top of the ladder and have secured a direct place in the Grand Final on Sunday 22 March. A fantastic effort by the team throughout the season.

Our Rovers Bhutanese team have also made the semi finals and will take on Barron on Saturday 14 March at Griffiths Park 1. Well done to the team on a strong season.

Our U18 CPL side will also play for a premiership when they take on Mulgrave in the Grand Final on Saturday 21 March, while our two Tier 3 teams will face each other in the Semi Final on Saturday 14 March at Griffiths Park 2 starting at 10am.

Tier 1 and Tier 2 still have their regular matches remaining as they finish off the home and away rounds.

A reminder to lock in our End of Season Presentation Night at the Red Beret on Friday 27 March as we celebrate the season together.

Also a big congratulations to Blake, Brodie, Ian, Lucas, Archie, Tommy and Will on a wonderful tournament representing Peninsula at the 16–19 State Championships last week. The team won every game on their way to the final against Metropolitan East. Despite some great cricket in the final they didn’t quite get across the line, finishing as silver medallists. This is a fantastic achievement against strong competition and we are incredibly proud to see our Rovers players representing at that level.

TIER 2 U 13 ZARRAFFAS ROVERS

Rovers 7/112 lost to Norths Gold 5/152

Losing the bat flip, Rovers were sent into the field first. The boys worked hard early, keeping the scoring in check but struggling to find a breakthrough in the first 20 overs. To their credit, they kept the pressure on in the final 10 overs, claiming five wickets in the final stretch to restrict the ladder-leading Norths to a very achievable 153. Wickets were shared by Liam, Alex I, Toby and Alex M.

In reply, Rovers fought hard but a steady fall of wickets slowed the run chase. Solid knocks from Joe (38*), Kai (22*), Andrew (15*) and Alex I (5*) kept the effort alive, but the side ultimately finished 40 runs short.

It was a performance that showed plenty of resilience and effort against the top side on the ladder, with the team never dropping their heads and continuing to compete right to the end. Awards went to Joe, Kai and Andrew.

TIER 2 U 13 WGC ROVERS

WGC Rovers 149 v Mulgrave 3/148.

Well, this game had me popping Blood pressure pills like tic tacs. Losing the toss we were under pressure early with no wickets and the opposition cruising along at 0/63. Enter Charlie to the fray, dismissing Tilly who was flaying our bowlers with contempt. Tight bowling from Finn, Aadit and Charlie pegged back the run onslaught to get the boys back in the game. Charlie 1/6 from 4 overs, Finn 1/15 and Riley 1/26 were the only wicket takers.

An awkward total to chase we were once again under the pump with the team struggling at 3/23. Isaak was solid as per usual up front, managing to be the first batter to retire. Charlie, Aadit and Riley read the game beautifully to also follow suit and retire not out. A few quick wickets later we were 6/84 needing another 65 runs from 12 overs. With 2 wickets in the shed the pressure was back on us. Charlie and Aadit kept calm and got us almost to the win before tragedy struck and Charlie was out with only 1 wicket left and 8 runs needed. Enter Riley aka Frosty to the crease. While I was on the ground having a heart attack the boys steered the ship and Riley hit the winning runs with 3 balls remaining. Players of the match went to the Icemen Charlie, Aadit and Riley. A special mention to Fateh from Mulgrave who snared a 5 wicket hall for his team.

Rovers ABC 172 defeated Mulgrave 130

Captain Oscar won the flip and send Mulgrave into bat. Our bowlers were on song today taking regular wickets with Aaron picking up two and Cooper L, kitty, Ben and Oscar all grabbing one each.
Then came the Cooper H show, Cooper had stated before the game that he was going to get 5 today no problem!

After 2.2 overs he had two with just 4 balls let in his spell then proceeded to claim a hatrick that included two bowled and a great catch from Kitty . He finished with 5/10 an amazing effort.
Our turn to bat and we got off to a bit of a shaky start with run flowing but also losing regular wickets. Brad played some nice shots on his way to 15, Oscar 12. Ben 11 and Cooper H brought us home with a solid 17 (even though he had also stated before the game he would get 50)

Awards today went to Cooper H and Brianna.

AGL PAINTING ROVERS GREEN

AGL Rovers 172 def Mulgrave 113.

A great effort from the boys today after being sent in to bat. Only losing 3 wickets was the highlight of the innings with Luca topscoring with an entertaining 27. Roly and Kieran got us off to a great start with the ball, while the rest of the team kept the pressure on the opposition with some tight bowling and sharp fielding. Then came the story of the day with Ollie picking up a hat trick in his second over, not to mention a fourth wicket to cap it all off. Award winners were Reuben, Roly and Ollie.

CNW ELECTRICAL ROVERS REDBACKS

Rovers Redbacks 129 v Norths 117.

Captain Ollie lost the bat flip and we were invited to bat first on a lush St Andrew’s outfield.  Ollie (9) and Xander (12) opened up and batted positively and sensibly on a ground that was never going to give up many runs. Jackson (12) and Jacob (18) also made useful contributions.

When it was our turn to bowl and field we were sharp from the outset – taking 8 wickets in all. Xander’s wicket keeping was tremendous and Campbell took a neat catch at backward square leg. All bowlers were impressive – particularly Hudson with 2-8.

Another fun morning for the green machine.

Our award winners were Ollie and Hudson.
