MONTHLY UPDATE

By John Margiotta (Cairns Rovers Cricket Club President)

Hello Rovers Family,

Again, I find myself at the beginning of another season of Rovers Cricket! I could not be more excited! I have attended junior training observing how much our juniors have grown and developed their game. Our seniors gather again, and comradery is as high as ever. I always get excited at the beginning of each season as our Rovers family gathers again.

We played a few rounds in juniors and seniors, and I can honestly say our future is very bright. Our club coach Andrew is and has been working very hard to ensure our preparation is at the highest standard for all of our players. Our volunteers work hard to make tasks easier as well as enjoyable. I am grateful to all the parents that put their hand up to help each week at the matches, this takes a lot of pressure off our coaches and managers. We always welcome parents to score and umpire at junior matches, if you want to help speak to the coach and they will happily give you some training.

Our committee has been tireless administering this season as well as forward planning for the seasons ahead. I am grateful to have such dedicated committee, they really make me look better than I really am!

Our senior captains and leaders spend a lot time preparing for each match and this is what makes our club so great. Solid leadership and organistation is key, we greatly appreciate the work put in by our leaders!

No matter what the result is, come the end of the season you will all be winners. Building a great club will make us all winners and provide us with life long memories that we will fondly look back on. So please enjoy the season ahead, give it your best effort and never be afraid to fail! We will always be there to help you.

JUNIOR RESULTS – ROUND 4

TIER 3 – Super Global Services Rovers (6-162) V Mareeba (51)

Batting first Rovers put on a competitive total of 162. Shivvy continued his good form with the bat scoring 64 runs from 72 balls not out. Backed up by Will 18 and Pranil 17 and a good cameo performance by Bikrem 22, there were runs on the board to defend. Lucas 2/6 and Sean 1/10 opened the bowling and set the line for the other bowlers to follow. Will’s 2/4 proved his status as a versatile all-rounder and Bikrem had a day out finishing with 2/2. Special mention to Jesse who spun the ball at right angles at times. The boys continue to improve every week, and the comraderie between them is amazing. Awards went to Shivvy, Lucas and Bikrem.

TIER 3 – Halpin Partners Rovers (8-149) V Barron River (9-164)

Captain Ian won the toss (four in a row – awesome!) and elected to bowl.

There was some excellent bowling on a damp wicket with Taj Walker grabbing 2 wickets for 11 runs off four overs and Max Costello 2 wickets for 27 runs off 6 overs. They were supported by Hayden, Cody, Lucas and Jett each getting a wicket with Brodie North getting a wicket and bowling very tightly for only 13 runs off 6 overs. There was some sublime fielding with Lucas, Ian and Cody each taking two catches.
Things looked very balanced at the break Rovers having set Barron a target of 165 to win.

After some great refreshments provided by Bernard, Ian and Cody opened with a century partnership with Cody eventually falling for 41 and, just 27 runs later, Ian finishing with a splendid 56.

With only 38 runs needed off eight overs we thought we were in with a BIG chance. Unfortunately due to some excellent Barron bowling, our wickets tumbled and by the 34th over we only managed 149 runs, falling 16 runs short of our target. One of those days and plenty of lessons learned. The boys demonstrated a great sporting spirit and camaraderie despite the disappointment.

We will nail it next week!

Awards went to Ian De Lange for his great batting and fielding, Brodie North for his tight bowling and Max Costello for a brilliant couple of wickets.

A challenging and very exciting day’s cricket, despite the disappointment.

TIER 2 – Rovers Red (5-180)  V Mulgrave Blue (7-182)

Saturday afternoon, Rovers Red had an opportunity against the top of the table Mulgrave Blue. Mulgrave Blue won the toss and batted, leaving us to field in the heat of the day.

The boys bowled and fielded really well, taking regular wickets and kept the mulgrave total in check for most of the innings. Despite a late flurry from the final two batters, the target was a chasable 182.

After a replenishing afternoon tea supplied by Eli and family, our run chase again took the game deep with plenty of our side reaching retirement status. The Reds were right on target going into the final 10 overs, but some tight bowling from the league leaders meant we needed an unlikely 27 runs from the final two overs. Our returning opener Travis went into overdrive, taking it to the mulgrave attack. In the end we went down by 2 runs.

This side loves a good run chase, and it was fantastic to see so many players contributing.  Players of the match went to Travis 44* (38) with the bat and 2/10 with the ball and Mitch 29* (25) and bowling figures of 1/13.

TIER 2 – Rovers Green V Atherton Maroon – DRAW

This week, Tier 2 Green travelled to Tolga to take on Atherton Maroon.  In hot, dry conditions, our co-captains Caleb and Carter won the toss and elected to bat.  Atherton’s strong bowling lineup saw them take early wickets, and Rovers Green was bowled out in the 26th over for 136.  Caleb, 38, not out, and Alex I, 26, led the way with the bat.  In response, Rovers Green had their best bowling performance of the year.  Joash opened the bowling and set the example of quality line and length pace bowling (1/9 off 4).  He was particularly well supported by Carter (1/13 off 5) and Caleb (1/19 off 5).  Needing 8 of the last over, Rovers Green kept the pressure on, and the match ended in a draw.  Credit to the whole team who persisted relentlessly in the field.

TIER 2 – Rovers Gold (8-100) V Norths Gold (8-121)

In a tough match at St Andrews Catholic College. Facing blustery conditions, Rovers Gold lost the bat flip and were sent in to bat. Despite the challenging conditions, the team showed grit, working hard for every run. Four batters retired after making solid starts, though the team couldn’t quite capitalize in the final overs. Elijah top-scored with 15 not out, anchoring the innings.

In the field, Rovers Gold put in a determined effort, with tight early bowling that put pressure on Norths. However, Norths’ middle order proved too strong in the end. Standout performances with the ball included Ash, who took 2/11, and Riley, who finished with figures of 2/18.

Definitely lessons learnt this week, which will make us bigger, faster, and stronger for the remainder of the season!

TIER 1 – Rovers Gold (145) V Norths (144)

Tier 1 Gold v Norths Lords Insurance nail biter played out today on Endeavour 4.
Norths won the flip and sent Rovers in to bat. A solid start from openers Isaak and Teddy saw us off to a flyer with Isaak top scoring on 31 and Teddy a tidy 13. Some tight bowling by Norths made runs hard to come by in the middle stages but Cooper and Bradley brought it home with 19 runs each.
Then it was our turn in the field. Although Norths were batting strongly we managed to pick up a steady stream of wickets due to some excellent fielding and run outs. We knew the scores were tight in the late stages of the game and witnessed bravery from Johno putting his body on the line to save four runs. Extra effort from the whole team lead us to victory by 1 run! Rovers Gold 145 to Norths 144.

Awards went to Bradley and Brianna as two of the most improved thus far.

TIER 1 – Rovers Green V Rover Red

The eagerly awaited tier 1 clash between rovers red and rovers green took place under a blazing sun at Ep2.  Tension was at fever pitch as red skipper Jackson won the bat flip against green captain Luca and sent the green machine in to bat – and they didn’t disappoint with the willow with an even contribution from all on the way to an imposing 154 off their 20 overs.  Plenty of boundaries were on show as Ollie (27),  Liam (25) & Luca (23) led the way.  For the redbacks some great efforts in the field didn’t quite lead to catches – perhaps next week!  Each of Aadit, Damandeep and Jackson snared a wicket.

Some early wickets in the Redback response halted their momentum – Liam particularly tidy on his way to 2-4 off 3 overs.  Ryan T (14) top scored for the Redbacks who kept fighting on their way to a commendable 81.

A late switch from red to green from Bronte (to even up the numbers) exemplified the great spirit the game was played in by both sides – and created some interest in the sibling rivalry between her and Jacob (a draw – cricket was the winner).

A great effort from all tier 1 players – from both teams.

SENIOR RESULTS

1st Grade – Twomey Schriber Rovers (176) V Mulgrave (7-222)
2nd Grade – Red Beret Hotel Rovers (82) V Barron (9-166)

A bit of a reality check for the 2s this week. We lost the toss and Barron elected to bat. Thresh and an impressive Ian De Lange (1-15 off 8 overs) kept it tight early. We lost our way in the middle overs and were uncharacteristic sloppy in the field as Barron put together a reasonable total of 166. Arch Ferguson finished with 3-36 and captain sauce 2-36.

Unfortunately when it was our time to bat we wilted and lost wickets at regular intervals. Only Dev (21) showed any real resistance as we were bundled out cheaply.

Full credit to Barron who out batted, out bowled and out fielded us and thoroughly deserved their win.

A big thank you to Pete Ferguson whose afternoon of watching his son ultimately turned into a full afternoon of both fielding and umpiring!!

3rd Grade – FGF Rovers (5-196) V Barron (172) – WIN

We headed out to Crathern Park for the afternoon with Pete winning the toss we elected to bat first. Simon and Archie partnership shot us of to a great start with Simon 24 off 39 and Archie 65 off 96 and then Ben and Tadgh brought us home with Ben 32 off 26 and Tadgh 31 off 34 with our total 5/196. Our bowlers working there magic Lachie taking 3 wickets and Taj and Justin both taking 2 and with our great fielding our catches had them all out on 10/172. Our player of the day going to Ben.

3rd Grade – Bhutanese Rovers (3-151) V Mulgrave Toads (9-150) – WIN
