Weekly Update - 29th September

Hello Rovers Community,

Junior training is on this Wednesday if you can make it we would love to see you there!

Our 2nd and 3rd grade teams battled hard on the weekend with some top efforts and some senior debuts.

Congrats to the Rovers players selected in the CFN Open squad for the Bulls Masters Country Challenge, happening in Cairns this weekend and to our juniors who did us proud in Brisbane last week.

The junior draw starts after the holidays, and we also need some volunteers to help this weekend at the Bulls Masters Country Challenge.

SENIOR RESULTS

RED BERET 2ND GRADE

After a delayed start thanks to rogue sprinklers leaving wet patches overnight, the young Rovers and Pete (average age of about 20) bowled first in a 32-over clash. The bowling innings began decently restricting the home side to under 3 an over at drinks. Blake struck with his first ball on debut (2/31) and Tadhg impressed with 3/22, but late hitting pushed Barron to 160.

Our chase began brightly before wickets fell in clumps; the batted okay until he fell to a dreaded full toss, and despite some fight from the tail we finished all out for 130. Lessons learnt and plenty of promise shown by our younger cohort (further showcasing that our junior system is the best in town) – we’ll bounce back bigger and stronger next week .

Debut Highlights:

  • Congratulations to Blake Watson on making his 2nd Grade debut, taking 2 wickets in a fantastic first-up performance. Well done, Blake!

  • A big congratulations also to Cooper and Will on their senior debuts. Extra special for Cooper, who got to take the field alongside his brother Hayden – a great family moment for the club. (Photo below)

FGF DEVELOPMENTS 3RD GRADE

The FGF Developments 3s packed their kit bags and headed out to Mulgrave for what turned out to be a testing afternoon of cricket. Mulgrave Kerala came out swinging, piling on 7/256 from their 35 overs. Chasing that total was always going to be a big ask, and despite some determined efforts, the Rovers were all out for 90.

There were still bright spots to cheer. Bill Meanie led the bowling charge, collecting 3/59 from his 7 overs, showing great fight against set batters. At the other end, Matthew Thompson kept things tight and chipped in with a wicket, finishing with a smart 1/27 from 5 overs at an economy rate that kept the pressure on.

With the bat, Anthony Whittle dug in for a gritty 31 from 64 balls, holding the innings together when wickets were falling quickly.

A big thank you to Travis for his efforts on the scorebook — every team needs a steady hand behind the pencil.

The scoreline might not have gone our way this time, but the Rovers spirit was alive and well. With the fight shown in patches, the boys will be eager to bounce back stronger in the next round.

PLAYERS ACHIEVEMENTS

Century Champions League Success

Congratulations to Ian (U16), Brodie (U16), Tadhg (U18) and Caleb (U14) who competed in the Century Champions League held in Brisbane last week.

All four boys put in fantastic performances for their respective teams and did the club proud on and off the field. A huge well done to each of you, your hard work and commitment are shining through!

SPECIAL MENTIONS

We are incredibly proud to acknowledge some contributions over the last couple of weekends by club members:

  • Holly Koch – a massive thank you for stepping up to score for the 2s and 3s this week. The club runs because of generous contributions like this.
  • Marty Costello – after backing up a week away with Peninsula as a parent, Marty was straight back into action, coaching Big Bash in the morning and then taking the field himself in the afternoon. That’s the spirit that keeps the Rovers family strong – a huge effort!
