Welcome to this week’s Rovers update.
Unfortunately, the rain played havoc across a number of grades on the weekend, with several matches called off. While it’s always disappointing to miss game time, we are hoping for clearer skies ahead as we head into the back end of the season.
A reminder to please mark your calendars for our End of Season Presentation Night on Friday 27th March at the Red Beret. It will be a fantastic opportunity to come together and celebrate the season, recognise performances across all grades and thank our volunteers. Lock it in now!
This week, don’t forget Pizza Night after junior training on Wednesday a chance for families to stick around, enjoy dinner together and support the club.
Looking ahead, 1st Grade makes a return this week playing our city vivals Norths, it should be a great afternoon/evening of cricket. We would love to see plenty of Rovers supporters there cheering the boys on.
Thanks again to all our players, families and volunteers for your continued support.

RED BERET 2ND GRADE
Rovers 109-4 def Atherton 107-9
A couple of early loose balls and a few dropped chances aside, the boys were on it with the ball and in the field. Once we settled we kept things tight and never really let Atherton get away, holding them to 107-9 off their overs. Joel (3/21) and Chris (3/18) contributing, but it was a proper team effort with everyone chipping in.
Chasing 108, Presty (57*) came out swinging and set the tone straight away. He kept the scoreboard ticking, boosted the net run rate and made sure he was there at the end to see us home in the 20th over.
6 big points and we’re up to 1st on the ladder. Win next week and we lock in a third straight Grand Final spot… big few weeks ahead. Let’s get to training and keep it rolling.

HALPIN PARTNERS COLTS (CPL)
Halpin Partners Rovers CPL Colts (8 – 122) beat Mulgrave 58
We headed down to Mulgrave for a top of the ladder clash against our season rivals and the table leaders.
After losing the toss and being sent into bat, Ian set about laying down a wonderful Captain’s knock (33 off 72), well supported by Will Palmer returning from injury (13 off 27). Unfortunately, Will had to retire hurt with a new, but hopefully not too serious injury. He looked in a lot of pain though. Get well Will we need you back! Xavier also added a useful, if at times somewhat flamboyant, 18 runs of 27. We set Mulgrave a target of 123 to win, about 20 short of what we would have liked.
With pressure on the opening bowlers to perform well, we saw a magnificent demonstration of some very quick bowling from Blake Watson taking three of the top order batsmen for just 6 runs. At the other end Xavier Curtin bowled a very accurate 4 overs with 1 maiden and just 3 runs (economy rate 0.75). The good work continued with Ian, Brodie Messina and Lucas all bowling tightly. Unfortunately, our fielding team started to take their foot off the pedal. Some loose fielding and inattention started to let us down. Then entered leggy, Brodie North. After a bit of a shaky start and with our fielders gradually
coming to life again, Brodie then took to the Mulgrave batsmen with gusto, taking out their top batsmen with a great catch from Ian. Brodie then proceeded to completely dismantle Mulgrave’s middle and lower order ending with 5 wickets from 4.4 overs for 17 runs. Well done Brodie!
In the end, it was a useful win that reinstated us to the top of the table…just…but importantly we need to remove the mid-innings fielding “slump” if we are going to do well in the finals. Some lessons learned but a lot of fun had.
Thanks to Dolf for coaching and umpiring, to Bernard for a long umpiring stint, to Clare for scoring and Jodi for afternoon tea. A good team effort all round!

TIER 2 U 13 ZARRAFFAS ROVERS
Zarraffa’s Rovers 7/219 def Barron 8/73
For the second week running, Captain Neil called it right, winning the bat flip and sending the opposition out to bake in the hot and humid conditions.
Rovers’ top order batsmen in Neil and Toby, got the innings off to a flyer. They weathered the new-ball storm and built a solid platform to have the team cruising at 1/74 by the first drinks break.
But as cricket so often reminds us, momentum can change quickly. The middle overs proved a testing passage, with six wickets tumbling in a tough 10-over stretch. Suddenly, the innings was on a knife-edge, heading into the second drinks break with just one wicket in hand.
Enter Alex I, who played a steady hand under pressure with a valuable 25 not out, and Neil (70*) and Toby (82*) returned from retirement to turn the tide once more. The pair put the pedal down, finding the gaps and clearing the ropes regularly. Rovers finished on a daunting 7/219.
Barron came out with plenty of grit, refusing to roll over and digging in with admirable resistance. But chasing leather all afternoon had taken its toll, and the required rate kept climbing. In the end, the target proved a bridge too far.
Neil snared three wickets to cap off a genuine all-round performance. Andrew chipped in with two, while Will and Ronan grabbed one apiece to have Barron all out for 73. Special mention to Kai, who stepped up to take the keeper’s gloves and performed admirably.
TIER 2 U 13 WGC ROVERS
WGC Rovers 4/188 v Mulgrave Five Rivers 46.
Winning the toss we bowled first.
Opening bowlers Jacob and Aadit had the batters struggling to score early and as the pressure built Riley and Oscar combined for a very slick runout as Mulgrave tried to sneak a second run. Wickets came thick and fast with Mulgrave dismissed in the 15th over for 46. Charlie 1/4, Ben 1/10, Finn 2/5 and Riley 3/4 the chief destroyers.
Fielding was exceptional with many catches taken, including an absolute screamer from Charlie.
Another solid opening stand from Isaak and Charlie ensured we got off to the start needed to chase down the small total. Charlie scored back to back 50s finishing 50*/36 balls. Finn had a small cameo with 25/19 balls. Aadit continued his breakout season in Tier 2 scoring a classy maiden 50 to finish 53*/ 38 balls muscling the ball over the ropes twice.
Players of the match went to Riley for an exceptional spell of bowling, Charlie, Aadit and team man Shenuka.
Big thanks to all the parents that help every week with scoring and umpiring!!!!

CNW ELECTRICAL ROVERS REDBACKS
Redbacks 125 v Mulgrave 159
We arrived at Walker Road to be pleasantly surprised by a comparatively dry pitch and outfield. Though it wasn’t the usual 35 degrees and 99% humidity, we did our best to acclimatize to the foreign conditions. Captain Alexander won the toss and decided to bowl. Our fielding and bowling was steady – Campbell took a great caught and bowled and Jacob 2-4 with his spinners.
When it was our turn to bat we toiled away against the tight toads attack. Our opponents energy in the field and catching was tremendous. Hudson added 20, Jacob 31 and Xander (17) and Alexander (15) ran superbly in the dying overs.
An enjoyable morning on a day when getting a game played was a real bonus.
Our award winners this week were Hudson and Xander.
