TIER 3 RESULTS

Halpin Partners Tier 3 Rovers

Rain, Runs and a Rovers Victory!

For the second week in a row, the mighty Halpin Partners Tier 3 Rovers headed up the Kuranda Range to Atherton.

With rain falling for most of the journey, things weren’t looking promising. As usual, Mareeba was enjoying its own personal weather system with barely a drop in sight, but as we approached Atherton, it became pretty clear that the cricket gods had other plans.

Despite the conditions, we won the toss and elected to bat first in what would become a rain-reduced 28-over contest.

Rovers Innings – 8/155

Our top order found the going tough against some very disciplined Atherton opening bowling. Runs were harder to come by than a sunny day in Atherton, with their bowlers consistently hitting good areas and making scoring opportunities few and far between.

Thankfully, our middle order decided that someone had better start troubling the scorers!

Hugh Ferguson, in his first knock of the season, led the charge with an excellent 33, while Bikram, Ashton and Neil all chipped in with valuable double-figure contributions.

But the real fireworks came towards the end of the innings, when Charlie and Lucas Morlin decided that enough was enough.

Charlie produced an outstanding 41 off just 24 balls, while Lucas clearly had somewhere else to be, smashing 15 not out off only 8 deliveries!

Their partnership completely changed the momentum of the innings, turning what could have been a modest total into a very competitive one.

By the end of our 28 overs, the Rovers had scrambled, hustled and occasionally bludgeoned our way to 8/155.

Considering the conditions and the tight bowling early, it was a fantastic team effort.

Atherton Innings – 4/54 off 13 overs

With 155 on the board, it was time for our bowlers to go to work.

And what a difference a week makes!

After last week’s bowling performance, which could generously have been described as having “plenty of development potential”, the boys clearly took the message on board.

Our opening bowlers were superb, keeping things tight, building pressure and making Atherton work for every run.

With the required run rate climbing faster than the drive up the Kuranda Range, Atherton’s middle order arrived at the crease already under serious pressure.

And this time, the Rovers weren’t letting them off the hook!

Wickets fell, runs dried up, and before too long, Atherton’s big guns were all back in the pavilion, taking their pads off and checking next week’s fixture.

At 4/54 after 13 overs, the heavens finally opened enough to bring proceedings to a premature end.

With the required runs a distant dream and the Rovers comfortably ahead on the rain-adjusted run rate, the result was official.

THE MIGHTY ROVERS HAD THEIR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON!

Apparently, all we needed to fix our bowling and fielding was another week of training and the threat of getting absolutely drenched! To make the coach even happier we only bowled 1 wide!

Players of the Match

With so many great contributions, we had three deserving award winners this week!

Charlie takes home an award for his explosive 41 off just 24 balls. His late-innings hitting was exactly what the team needed and helped turn the game in our favour.

Lucas Morlin also picks up an award after a brilliant all-round performance, smashing 15 not out off 8 balls before backing it up with outstanding bowling figures of 1/1. Clearly, Lucas was determined to make an impact without spending too much time doing it!

And finally, Alex Ireland earns his award for a brilliant match-winning catch, proving that sometimes one moment of magic in the field can be just as valuable as a bag of wickets or a mountain of runs.

Well done to whole team on a great team performance!

A Huge Thank-You to Our Volunteers!

A massive shout-out to Gary for taking care of the scoring, and to Pete and Ben for stepping up and umpiring.

These games simply don’t happen without parents and volunteers generously giving up their time, and we really appreciate their efforts.

With the rain, the cold and the unpredictable Atherton weather, the boys weren’t the only ones deserving of a medal! Thanks again, legends!

Coach’s Wrap-Up

Two trips to Atherton, two very different performances, and now we’re officially on the winners’ list!

Next week we finally get to play our first game of the season on the eastern seaboard of Australia, taking on Barron River at Trinity Beach.

Hopefully the boys remember how to play cricket without needing a jumper, a raincoat and a passport to get there!

Well done, Rovers! First win on the board. Bring on Round 3!

FNQ Nature Tours Tier 3 Rovers

FNQ Nature Tours 4-109 defeated Barron River 104

Rovers Shine Through the Showers

Scattered showers, two visits from the covers and enough grey cloud to keep everyone watching the sky made for a memorable morning of junior cricket. Through every interruption, the FNQ Nature Tours Rovers remained positive and focused, producing a strong team performance against Barron River.

Barron River batted first, with Hayden and Jack sharing the opening bowling duties for Rovers. Hayden settled quickly into an economical spell, conceding only 8 runs from three overs.

Rovers then rotated the bowling throughout the team, and the wickets began to arrive.

Wil H made the first breakthrough of the morning, claiming 1/14, while Jett also joined the wicket-takers with 1/10. Toby made an excellent contribution through the middle of the innings, collecting 2/15 from three overs.

The standout figures belonged to Eli and Tommy. Eli produced a terrific spell of 3/5 from three overs including 2 wickets from 2 balls, while Tommy finished with an equally impressive 3/7 from three. Between them, Eli and Tommy collected six wickets while conceding only 12 runs.

That’s not bowling, that’s conducting a clearance sale. Everything had to go!

The rain added another challenge, with the covers brought onto the field twice during the morning. Each time play resumed, however, Rovers quickly returned to their task. The interruptions did little to disturb the team’s enthusiasm or concentration.

When it was time to bat, Rovers lost a few early wickets, and at 3/21, the innings needed someone to establish a partnership and provide some stability.

Up stepped Caleb and Carter.

Caleb produced a patient and composed innings of 33 not out from 52 balls. With conditions unsettled and the covers never too far away, Caleb occupied the crease, kept the scoreboard moving and provided the steady hand Rovers needed.

Carter offered valuable support with 21 from 40 balls, including two boundaries. Caleb and Carter rebuilt the innings and lifted the score from 3/21 to 4/63, putting Rovers back in a strong position.

After Carter’s departure, Will J joined Caleb and continued the good work. Will finished unbeaten on 18 from 27 balls, combining with Caleb to take Rovers through to 4/109 from 24 overs.

The partnership between Caleb and William was calm, sensible and effective. While the clouds were wandering around looking for more mischief, the two Rovers batters remained firmly on course.

It was ultimately a wonderful team performance from Rovers. The wickets were shared among five bowlers, the fielding group supported every spell, and the batting recovery demonstrated terrific patience and teamwork.

Awards went to Eli, Tommy, Toby and Caleb.

TIER 2 RESULTS

WGC Rovers

Tier 2. Rovers 6-187 v Mulgrave 7-97.

The rampaging Redbacks made it 2 from 2 to start the season with an impressive performance against the Toads.  We won the toss and elected to field in damp conditions. Our bowling was tight early and then Aadit (2-6) turned the game our way with a run-out and then 2 wickets in an over.  The tight bowling continued with Max (1-3), Andrew (1-10) and Shenuka (1-10) keeping the pressure on the visitors.

Any nerves in our reply were put to bed immediately when skipper Riley crunched the first ball of our innings to the boundary.  The opening partnership between Riley (34*} and Aadit (37) was all class.  The middle order did their part too with Andrew 32* and Max 21* leading the way.

By stumps we had put together a very polished team performance with many highlights during the afternoon.  Keep an eye on the Redbacks!

Our award winners today were Aadit and Max.

Zarraffas Rovers

Tier 2 – What a sensational performance from the Zarraffa’s team today, securing a dominant 110-run victory over the Cyclones. Taking to the crease first, our batters set the tone with an aggressive, high-scoring innings to build an incredible total of 5-226 off our 30 overs. Cooper Halley led the charge with a blazing, unbeaten 64 off just 42 balls—including 6 fours and 4 sixes—to earn the Batting Award for his game-changing display. He was brilliantly supported by Isaak Blake (40* off 40) and sharp, energetic contributions throughout the order to put us firmly in the driver’s seat.

When it was our turn in the field, the team kept the pressure on from start to finish, restricting the opposition to 8-116 in reply. Our bowling unit operated with great control and discipline, making key breakthroughs whenever the Cyclones looked to build momentum. Teddy Berry was a standout all-round force, delivering a tight spell of 1-4 off his 2 overs and making some remarkable plays in the field. Every player brought fantastic intensity, making life extremely difficult for the opposition batters.

Liam Brand won an award for somehow managing to miss out on a few stone-cold, obvious LBW shouts during his spell (Steve…..) —though he still managed a top-notch spell of 1-8 off 4 overs! It was a fantastic team effort overall, filled with sportsmanship, sharp skills, and fun. Huge congratulations to all the kids on a well-deserved win, and let’s keep this momentum going into our next match!

TIER 1 RESULTS

AGL Painting Tier 1 Rovers

Tier 1 AGL Rovers 103 def Mulgrave Specsavers 71.

A great first victory from our team today. Some tight bowling saw us restrict Mulgrave’s scoring to the point that the ball still looks brand new. Overall, 12 wickets were taken with Herbert taking 3 and Hendrix chipping in with another 2. Batting was impressive, only giving away 4 wickets in our 20 overs. Debutant Indira showed real class in her first innings and looked very solid at the crease. Award winners were Indira, Henry and Emmett.

Archers Body Corporate Tier 1 Rovers v Westpac Tier 1 Rovers

Combined Round 2 match report

Westpac Rovers 148 def by ABC Rovers 184

The tier 1’s and their families braved the wet at Endeavour Park, in a match with plenty of highlights. When it wasn’t raining actual rain, it was raining runs and wickets, with 26 wickets falling across the two innings.

ABC’s Captain Kiani won the toss and the decision to bowl was a good one, Bradley knocking the stumps over with the first ball of the match. This set the tone, debutant James nailing a 20 metre direct hit run out with his first touch in tier 1. Seven bowlers were among the wickets, including Liesel with her first ever scalp, with Johno the stand out with 4 for 8 from 3 overs. Hudson and Damandeep scored 19 each, but the biggest cheer came when Xander hit a big 6 over fine leg on his way to 24.

In the second innngs, Aaron and Bradley both reached 20+, Brianna and Ben also with strong contributions. Campbell was the pick of the Westpac bowlers with 4 wickets, and Hudson and Alexander bowling very economical spells.
A big thanks goes to the scorer and umpire volunteers from both teams, with first timers from both sides stepping up and getting the job done (any score discrepancies can be blamed on raindrops coming through the gazebo and smudging the scorecar).

Awards went to ABC’s Bradley, James, and Johno, and also to Westpac’s Xander, Alexander, Damandeep, and Lincoln.
