Weekly Update 16th February

Welcome to this week’s Rovers update!

It’s been another big week around the club as the season continues to roll on, with teams back on the field and plenty happening both on and off the pitch. As always, it’s fantastic to see strong support from players, families, volunteers and supporters each weekend our club simply wouldn’t run without you.

A reminder as well to mark your calendars for our end of season presentation night, happening Friday 27th March at the Red Beret. Lock the date in now it’s always a great night celebrating our players, volunteers and another big season for the club.

A special mention this week to James, Jessica and Alexander, with both Mum and Dad taking the field in 3rd Grade while young Alexander represented Rovers in Tier 1 a true family affair and exactly what club cricket is all about. We love seeing Rovers families enjoying the game together across all grades.

Thanks for being part of the Rovers family.

Go Green!

ALL GRADE RESULTS

TWOMEY SCHRIBER PROPERTY GROUP 1ST GRADE

Rovers 161 defeated Atherton 122 by 39 runs.

The Green Machine produced a gritty performance on the road, overcoming a mid-innings wobble to post a competitive total before backing it up with disciplined bowling.

Batting first, we started steadily with Kael (24), but the innings took a sharp turn when we lost 5/16, suddenly finding ourselves in real trouble. From there, it was about composure and rebuilding.

Dayne stood tall with a superb (match-winning) knock — a career A Grade best 84 off 78 balls — striking 8 fours and 2 sixes in a composed yet authoritative innings. Just as importantly, the middle and lower order dug in and stayed with him, absorbing pressure and allowing him to anchor us to 161, a total that felt more than competitive given the circumstances.

Defending 161, we were sharp from the outset and created a phenomenal buzz in the field. TK (2/17 off 6) and Berry (1/6 off 4) set the tone with disciplined spells, while Henry was outstanding through the middle, claiming 2/20 off 7, including the crucial wicket of the Atherton skipper. Brodie and Archie chipped in with a wicket each, and Tadhg finished the job in style with 2/4 from 1.2 overs, bowling Atherton out for 122.

It’s never easy beating the Redfooters up the hill, but we rallied together, showed resilience, and responded strongly after last week’s disappointment against Cassowary Coast. While finals remain a mathematical possibility, the focus is clear — finish the season strongly with two big performances after the bye and build momentum that carries into next year. Next up will be our city rivals in a blockbuster at Cazalys on the 28th of February, will be great to have a sea of green supporting the boys.

RED BERET 2ND GRADE

Rovers 153 defeated Cassowary Coast by 6 wickets.

What a win! An epic game at GP1 saw the 2s produce a professional chase to run down 152.

After the visitors elected to bat first, we knew the task wouldn’t be easy in the overcast, muggy weather. Blake and Ian once again led the attack superbly, creating chances early. The key breakthrough came in the 11th over thanks to finger spinner Joel, and from there we kept things tight…conceding just 3 wides for the innings. A terrific effort from all the bowlers. At the halfway mark, we were confident the target was well within reach.

Chaddy’s superb (45) at the top of the order laid the platform by the 20 over mark. Sykes and Ferg rotated the strike well to keep the chase ticking along. It’s not every week you get to share the field with life member G. Dutton, but his unbeaten 52* was pure class. (I’m sure we will hear the ball by ball review) The team was proud to watch on as the umpires’ arms were raised 3 times in his special knock.

Great camaraderie this afternoon lads — let’s keep the momentum rolling as we take on Atherton next week

Make up game Thursday night 30 over v Norths

Loosing the toss Norths wanted to bat and they were in for a big surprise.

Even with a strong Norths lineup, our bowlers did the job and dismissed them for just 41 runs. The bowling and fielding were brutal and the spoils went to Brodie North taking 3 wickets , Brodie Masina 2, Xavaier 2 and Blake, Ian and Lucas taking 1 each. Chasing 42 for a win was never guaranteed but Capt Ian de Lange stayed out there for a 20 not out hitting the winning runs in the 13th over. A special mntion goes out to Rocco Farquharson we got a last minute call up to come and keep for the team and did an amazing job taking his first catch in colts.

We played Atherton on Saturday at Endeavour park and sadly the weather was the winner. Thanks to Jill for feeding the boys and Bernard for helping out with the covers.

We play top of the log Mulgrave next Saturday so all hands on deck boys. 4 more games to  the finals.

TIER 3 U18 FNQ NATURE TOURS ROVERS V SGS ROVERS

Rovers 4-112 defeated Mulgrave 9-99.

After some over night precipitation picked a gap through the covers on Endeavour Park, our game needed to be relocated to Griffiths Park.

Hats off to the team at Grassed Up for getting things ready at the drop of a hat and allowed us to get started just 15 minutes after the original scheduled start time.

Captain Caleb was again unable to win the toss and the mighty greens were made to bowl first.

The first 7 overs were almost all Mulgrave’s way apart from a loan wicket from seamer Jack adding some respectability at 1/33.

A change of ends brought a change of fortune as Wil and Carter both picked up wickets early in their spells – Carter with his first ball, then Wil with 2 wickets in the following over.

Mulgrave then got to work and attempted to play the long game. Just as our boys were starting to nod off due the lack of intent from the batting pair, Jett injected himself into the game, running out the batsmen at the non strikers end. That was the shot in the arm rovers needed as they went onto take another four wickets in the next nine overs restricting Mulgrave to 99 off 29 overs.

Tommy was elevated to the top of the order and together with Travis got the run chase off to a healthy start. Despite a few wickets falling the ever reliable Captain Caleb and the swash buckling Jett were able to reach the target with four overs to spare.

Award winners were Jett 0/2 (2), 25* (42) and a run out and Caleb 1/7 (3) and 22* (58).

Big shout our to everyone for being so flexible at the beginning of the day! I think Sim said she’d helped with two lots of covers before her first coffee! Thanks also to all the umpires, scorers and Emma’s morning tea. It all contributes to the teams success!

Next week semi finals come early for the FNQ Nature Tours lads with a must win clash against third placed Cassowary Coast.

TIER 3 U18 SUPER GLOBAL SERVICES ROVERS

Rovers 7/130 defeated Atherton 5/129

For the second week in a row the Rovers alarm clocks went off at an hour normally reserved for bakers and long-haul pilots. Up the hill we went again, this time to picturesque Atherton, with a full squad of 12 ready for action. Outstanding commitment from the whole group.

Captain Mungus won the toss and elected to bowl on a pitch that looked like it still needed a coffee and a warm shower. It was a little undercooked, a little unpredictable, and just spicy enough to keep everyone interested.

Our bowlers started brilliantly. Tight lines, good energy, plenty of chaos. Unfortunately, the ball appeared to have been dipped in dishwashing liquid. There were more people getting dropped than in a season finale of Love Island.

To the boys’ credit, they didn’t let it unravel. Even as Atherton cashed in on the extra lives, we kept plugging away. Just as they looked ready to post something uncomfortable, our spin cartel tightened the screws and we restricted them to 5/129 off 35 overs.

Thomas and Luca opened up the innings starting in great touch and then in what can only be described as a double plot twist, we found ourselves 2/13. Enter Hughie and Rocco, hard hats on, lunch pails in hand, ready to rebuild.

On a pitch that more than occasionally bounced like a tennis ball at the Australian Open, they dug in, they scratched and survived. The partnership was just starting to hit its straps when Rocco though he was Bill Brown circa 1947 and left his crease a fraction early. The Atherton bowler suddenly thought he was Vinoo Mankad and whipped off the bails.

From there Hughie and Mungus teamed up and took control. The pair put on a beautiful 62-run partnership that squeezed the life out of the polished Atherton bowling unit. Mungus contributed a punchy 22 off 20 balls, while Hughie produced a masterclass.

Hughie’s 68 off 91 balls had the patience of a monk in meditation… and when required, the swashbuckling flair of Hugh Jackman on Broadway. Calm when needed, aggressive when required.
Just when we thought it was cruise control, Atherton hit back. Four wickets fell for 14 runs and suddenly the atmosphere ramped. Someone forgot to tell Riley to be nervous though and he walked in like a hired professional, saw the target, and clinically knocked off the last couple of runs to win the game with 15 balls to spare. Job done. Blood pressure slowly returning to normal.

Players of the Match:
• Hughie – 68 (91) and 2/22 off 6 overs
• Mungus – 22 (20), 0/10 off 4 overs and a one handed screamer of a catch.
• Lucas – 2/20 and a very important 4 runs at the death

Massive shoutout to Tash for scoring again and to Pete and Peter for their ever-reliable umpiring.
We finally return to sea level next week to take on Mulgrave at Endeavour. Sunscreen back in the bag, oxygen levels restored, and the Super Global Services Rovers train still rolling.

An absolute scorcher today in the valley with many extra drinks breaks. Some tight bowling with 10 wickets taken after bowling first with Luca and Danura taking 2 wickets each. Luca was also on fire with the bat, making 37 off 15, with Emmett 21, Josh 19 and Danura 15 also in the runs. Award winners were Luca, Danura and Emmett.

CNW ELECTRICAL ROVERS REDBACKS

We headed to Edmonton to take on the lady toads in what proved to be very steamy  conditions. Bronte kindly offered to play for our opponents and Damondeep took a wicket in the first offer. It proved to be the theme for the morning with wickets falling at very regular intervals for both teams. Alexander and Damondeep finished with 3 wickets each, Hudson a neat run out and Xander 2 great catches behind the stumps.

Our batting had lots of wickets and lots of boundaries with Jacob leading the way with 39. Hudson 15. A fun but sweaty morning for all. Our award winners were Tiyan and Damondeep.

ABC Gold 115 d Norths Lords 104

A last over thriller for the second week in a row, this time Rovers Gold getting the Valentines Day chocolates.
Sent in to bat, top 3 Aaron, Oscar, and Johno took the shine off the new ball with sensible batting, not losing their wicket while ticking the scoreboard over. Boundaries were hard to come by, but Bradley had some lusty blows on his way to 21, with every other batter scoring between 8 and 13.

Bradley was also pick of the bowlers with two wickets, but again it was a team effort in the field, with every player fielding well and putting pressure on the bowlers. It could have gone either way but two runouts in the last over saw us home, which was a great result with some of our big hitters missing. Big thanks to the parents who stepped up with scoring, umpiring, and running drinks.
