This week saw five Rovers senior teams take to the field, with two 2nd Grade teams and three 3rd Grade teams getting their seasons underway, along with the Barrier Reef Big Bash on Saturday.
There was plenty of cricket across the opening round, with some mixed results, some great individual performances and plenty of positives to take into the weeks ahead.

Season Opener – A Tough Start for Magnum Plumbing KSS Rovers
Magnum Plumbing KSS Rovers 2nd Grade got their season underway at Brendan Nash Oval against Norths Babinda Electrics, with Norths recording a 50-run victory.
Batting first, Norths posted an imposing 4/233 from their 40 overs. The Rovers bowlers battled hard, with Ranjodh Singh Yodha (1/42), Karan Samra (1/25) and Anil Chaudhary (1/32) among the wickets. Vicky Lefty also bowled an excellent spell, finishing with 1/30 from 8 overs at an economy rate of just 3.75.
Chasing 234 for victory, the Rovers showed plenty of fight but were eventually bowled out for 183. Vicky Lefty led the way with a fantastic 65 from 77 balls, including six boundaries and a six. Karan Samra provided valuable support with 46 from 63 balls, while Vishal Sharma (14) and Anil Chaudhary (12) also made contributions.
Despite falling short, there were plenty of positives to take from the opening game, with some strong individual performances and plenty of fight shown throughout the match.
The season is a long one, and the Magnum Plumbing KSS Rovers will look to bounce back strongly in the next game.
Super Global Service Rovers 3rd Grade Open the Season with a Win
Super Global Service Rovers 3rd Grade got their season off to a great start with a hard-fought three-wicket victory over Muddies, chasing down 102 after Muddies finished their innings at 6/101.
There was no better way to start the game than with ‘The Surgeon’ Rhys Thomas aiming down and annihilating the stumps with a direct hit run out, officially kicking off our season. With the ball, Hayden Bromell led the way with an excellent 3/22 from six overs. Rhys ‘The Surgeon’ Thomas and Mungus also picked up a wicket each, while the bowling group kept the pressure on throughout the innings. Skipper Justin Hodge was particularly economical, conceding just seven runs from his four overs.
Rovers then batted second and had to work hard for the chase. Simon Taylor made 22, while Graham Dutton finished unbeaten on 16 and Rocco Farquharson contributed an important 10 as Rovers reached 7/102 to secure the win.
A special congratulations goes to the young players playing their first game with the senior team. Stepping into senior cricket is a big achievement, and they all contributed to a terrific team result and gained valuable experience alongside the senior players.
There was also a great example of cricketing spirit from Simon Taylor, who helped Muddies in the field when they were short of players — and even managed to take a catch while fielding for the opposition!
A positive start for Super Global Service Rovers 3rd Grade, with contributions across the team and, most importantly, a win to begin the season. Well done, Rovers!
The scoreboard may show a loss, but there was still plenty for the Terranovus Rovers to celebrate in a memorable Third Grade outing against Mulgrave at Minniecon Gregory Oval.
Mulgrave put together an imposing 212 from their 35 overs, leaving Terranovus Rovers with a sizeable chase. The team battled hard but finished 7/114 from 31 overs, with Mulgrave taking the points. The result, however, only tells part of the story.
The day became a genuine family occasion, with Simon North taking the field for the first time in 15 years alongside sons Caleb and Brodie. Getting three members of the North family into the same Rovers XI was a pretty special milestone — and Brodie made sure nobody would forget the occasion!
Brodie produced an extraordinary spell of 7 overs, 7 wickets for 39 runs. Better still, his seven-for included a hat-trick, and a team double hat-trick.
Apparently playing alongside Dad and his brother for the first time wasn’t quite memorable enough!
There were contributions across the generations. Jack Fitzgerald in his first senior game was excellent with the ball, returning 1/11 from four overs, while Isaac Brooks also picked up a wicket for his first game as a Rovers player in his first outdoor cricket game.
With the bat, Caleb and Billy got us off the a good start. Experienced campaigner Kyle Coleman provided the backbone of the innings, finishing unbeaten on 39 from 39 balls, striking eight boundaries. Brodie Masina stayed with him at the end, finishing 8 not out.
It wasn’t the Terranovus Rovers day on the scoreboard, and Mulgrave were deserving winners, but there was plenty to take from the performance.
Bhutanese Rovers had a tough start to the season, bowled out for 53 before Barron chased down the total at 2/56.
Not the result the team was hoping for, but plenty to build on as they settle into the season and look ahead to next week.
CCA needs volunteers over the coming weekends, particularly for Cairns on a Fork.

It’s a relaxed community afternoon and evening at Griffiths Park, with a great range of food and drink vendors, live acoustic music, the Barrier Reef Big Bash, a licensed bar and plenty of space to bring a picnic rug or camp chair and enjoy the afternoon on the lawn.
This is an important fundraiser that helps support the upkeep and improvement of Griffiths Park and Endeavour Park, the grounds our cricket club uses each week.
