It was a busy weekend of cricket, with our 1st Grade side taking the field for their opening round, alongside our Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 teams!
Plenty of cricket action across the grades, keep reading below for all of the match reports.
Fancy Hot Dog Night – Saturday 17th October!
Our Vice President, Mark, has organised a Fancy Hot Dog Night at Griffiths Park this Saturday, 17th October, following the games.
All three of our 3rd Grade teams will be playing at Griffiths Park, so it’s a great opportunity for players, families and supporters to stick around, enjoy a hot dog and catch up with everyone!
Thanks to Mark for organising!
Go Rovers!
Club first
Selection is about building the best and most balanced Rovers teams—not simply reading a scorebook. Ability, form, training, availability, attitude, development and team balance all matter.
You may not always get the grade or role you hoped for, but every Rovers team matters. Wherever you are selected: embrace the opportunity, perform your role and put the team first.
1st Grade: Rovers 7/145 def. Barron River 141
The drought is broken! The Mighty Rovers have won a Round 1 game for the first time in six years, and it took an absolute thriller to do it.
Barron River were bowled out for 141, and it was a bowling effort full of character. Berry was the standout with 4/27 off 7, removing both openers early to leave them 2/17. A solid partnership through the middle threatened to take the game away, until Chris Davies broke through to make it 3/92. From there the boys hit the front, with Barron River losing 7/49. Special mention to Vicky, who took his first 1st Grade wickets for Rovers on debut and finished with 2/23 off 8 relentless overs. TK (1/25 off 8, including 2 maidens), Henry (1/17 off 5), Chris (1/16 off 4) and Archie (1/9 off 2) all chipped in as everyone in the field backed them up.
With the bat, everything seemed to be against us. We lost two early wickets and at 7/77 we still needed 65 to win. Berry dug in for a gritty 46 and Vicky chipped in, but wickets kept falling and the game looked to be slipping away.
Then the King boys (The Icemen) rose as our saviours. Henry (30* off 50) soaked up the pressure and rotated the strike, while TK (38* off 33) counterattacked to break the back of the chase. Together they put on an unbroken 68-run partnership to take us home. It was a composed, mature batting display from two players with ice in their veins.
That fightback says a lot about our club culture. Nobody gave up, and there was a belief we could do something special all the way to the finish line. A huge thank you to everyone who stayed around to support, to those who scored throughout the game, and to Matty and Hodgie for running the canteen. Everything about last night epitomises what it means to be a Rover.
We may be down, but we are never out. Can’t wait to hear: R-O-V-E-R-S
ROVERS
Plenty more times this year, and hopefully next time it’ll be more in sync
A special win, which will be one of many as the 1s boys prepare for a massive season.
The mighty twos left the comfort of Griffiths Park for the first time this year, venturing south to face the dangerous Mulgrave Punjabi side.
Winning the toss, Rovers elected to bat on a classic low and slow walker road pitch. In his first game for the season Sykesy (16 off 17) got us of to a bright start, with the opening partnership reaching 30, before Ian was unluckily (for the second day in a row) adjuded LBW. This triggered a mini collapse and we were suddenly 3 for 43.
Archie and Barnsey began the rebuild progressing the score to 72, before Archie fell right on the stroke of drinks.
Big Locky joined Barnsey after drinks and the pair shifted the momentum firmly in Rovers favour, combining for a 52 run partnership that set up the total. Locky fell for 23, but Barnsey kept working hard, eventually reaching his first half century for Rovers. A fine knock. Harry (22) and Xavier (11) added the finishing touches, as we reached 181 from our allotted overs.
Unsurprisingly, Mulgrave came out swinging smashing Watto (1/16) for 3 boundaries in the first 5 balls, but he struck back on the final ball of the opening over to rattle the openers stumps.
Deapite the early setback, the shots kept coming from Mulgrave. Xavier (1/22) held his nerve removing the other opener, and when Archie chimed in it was 4 for 53.
From there it was the Thresh and Northy show. Returning from injury Rob’s line and length was unplayable at Walker Rd, finishing with and impressive 4 for 18 – all LBW or bowled, while Northy (3/12) spun a web and just keeps taking wickets…. Even his full tosses are apparently unplayable. Mulgrave being bowled out for Mulgrave for 83 in just the 21st over. A big win for the twos.
A tough outing for our Magnum Plumbing KSS Rovers 2nd Grade, going down to Cyclones by 42 runs at Innisfail TAFE.
Cyclones finished on 7/143, with Rovers all out for 101.
On to the next round, boys!
A nail-biting finish for our Super Global Services Rovers 3rd Grade, going down to Cyclones by just 2 runs at Innisfail TAFE.
Cyclones posted 8/158, with Rovers finishing on 3/157.
TerraNovus Rovers v HVAC Bhutanese Rovers Jimmy Maher Oval 10/9/26.
HVAC Rovers won the toss and elected to send TerraNovus Rovers into bat. A good toss to win on what turned out to be a tricky wicket. Our batters found the going a bit tough and posted a score of 90 that was a bit below par but enough to give us something to defend. Most batters got off to a start but we couldn’t put together any big scores. The highlight was a big bomb by Dutto over square for six.
Bill then turned to open the bowling with one of our youngest players and one of our most experienced with Brodie Mesina and Aaron Lock first up.
With 3 wickets apiece they kept the batsman turning over which gave us a sniff. Throw in a run out and we were suddenly on the front foot. Then came on the spinners Joe Barnes & Brodie North to mop up the tail and hand an unlikely victory to the TerraNovus side.
Thanks to the HVAC boys as they are a great bunch of blokes.
A new season, five new faces, and a Thomas masterclass to kick things off!
A new cricket season is upon us, and with a new sponsor, a new team name and five rookies stepping up into Tier 3, there is plenty to be excited about for the Halpin Partners Tier 3 Rovers!
Our season opener saw us make the trip up the hill to Atherton for what was the second instalment of the Atherton v Rovers showdown for the day, with our fellow Rovers side taking on the other Atherton team earlier in the morning.
With the toss won and the decision made to bat first, it was time to blow out the cobwebs and see what the new season had in store.
Bikram and Thomas got us off to a solid start, putting together a handy opening partnership. Bikram looked comfortable at the crease, compiling a well-made 19 off 23 balls before departing.
This brought Luca to the crease, and together with Thomas, the pair set about building an impressive 86-run partnership. Luca played a patient and methodical innings, scoring 27 off 50 deliveries, while Thomas continued to go about his business with the concentration and determination of a seasoned professional.
Lucas chipped in with 6, before Ashton (14 not out off 12) and Finn (4 not out off 4) played their roles perfectly in the closing stages.
But the day belonged to Thomas!
In what can only be described as a batting masterclass, Thomas produced the highest score of his young cricketing career, finishing with an outstanding 89 off 109 balls, including 11 boundaries.
It was an innings that had everything. Patience and discipline early, plenty of hard running through the middle, and some magnificent boundary hitting as the innings progressed.
Thomas showed exactly how to construct an innings. Do the hard work early, value your wicket, build your confidence, and then enjoy the rewards when the opportunity presents itself.
Unfortunately, he fell in the second-last over, just 11 runs short of what would have been a thoroughly deserved century.
What a way to start the season, Thomas!
The Rovers finished on 4/185, a very respectable total, although with possibly the quickest outfield in Far North Queensland and boundaries that looked suspiciously like they’d been borrowed from Tier 1, we suspected we might be a few runs under par.
Atherton Innings – The Bash Brothers Arrive!
Going into the field, we knew Atherton would present plenty of opportunities.
Several of their stars were backing up from the earlier game, and we figured that after a full morning of cricket, the prospect of another series of 20-metre sprints between wickets would be about as appealing as an extra fitness session after training.
Unfortunately, while their enthusiasm for running may have been limited, their enthusiasm for hitting boundaries certainly wasn’t!
The Atherton openers got away to a solid start, although the Rovers were creating plenty of chances. Unfortunately, a few catches went begging, some run-out opportunities narrowly escaped us, and the cricket gods weren’t quite ready to smile on the boys in green.
Thomas, clearly not content with dominating the batting innings, decided to get involved with the ball as well, breaking the opening partnership at 38 thanks to a good catch from Lucas.
This brought the Riley brothers together at the crease.
Now, the Riley brothers appeared to have a fairly straightforward batting strategy. Running between wickets was optional. Hitting the ball as hard and as far as possible was compulsory!
The Bash Brothers of the Tablelands were in business.
Knowing we needed to break the partnership, the Rovers continued to work hard, but the ball seemed to have an uncanny knack of landing just beyond the reach of our fielders.
The brothers piled on 74 runs in quick time, smashing 11 fours and 4 sixes between them. It wasn’t so much running between wickets as it was standing and bludgeoning the ball.
Thankfully, the Rovers boys hung in there and both brothers were eventually dismissed, and with the score at 129, the Rovers were right back in the contest.
The green machine continued to chip away, picking up wickets at reasonably regular intervals, and at 6/153, there was still a genuine sniff of victory.
Unfortunately, Atherton’s seventh-wicket partnership proved a bridge too far, with the home side eventually chasing down our total.
It wasn’t the result we were after, but there were plenty of positives to take away from the day.
Bowling and Fielding Highlights
Riley led the way with the ball, returning excellent figures of 3/26 from 5 overs, while Luca Hutton was equally impressive, picking up 2/15.
With the Atherton batsmen launching balls to just about every corner of the Tablelands, our fielders certainly got their steps up for the day!
The catches were shared around, with Lucas taking 3, Rocco 2, and Finn and Elijah collecting one each.
There were also plenty of nearly moments, with catches just out of reach and run-outs that could easily have gone our way.
Let’s just say there will be no shortage of catching, throwing and bowling drills at training over the coming weeks!
Thomas takes out our opening Player of the Match award after an extraordinary all-round performance.
His magnificent 89 off 109 deliveries was an innings well beyond his years. In fact, watching him patiently build his innings before unleashing his boundary hitting, you could have been forgiven for thinking he should have been over in South Africa batting alongside Matt Renshaw rather than entertaining us on the Atherton Tablelands!
And just to make sure nobody else got a look in, he backed it up with the ball, taking 1/23 off 5 overs.
A sensational performance and a thoroughly deserved award.
A special mention also goes to Luca, who collected our other award for his three catches.
Coach’s Wrap-Up
While we didn’t quite get the chocolates in Round 1, there is plenty to be optimistic about.
With five rookies making the step up to Tier 3, this season was always going to be about learning, developing and building confidence against some quality opposition.
Our batting showed great maturity, particularly through Thomas and Luca’s partnership, and the boys demonstrated that they are more than capable of putting together a competitive total.
Our bowling and fielding? Well, a real estate agent might describe it as “a coach’s delight” – plenty of potential, solid foundations and enormous scope for improvement!
The good news is that we know exactly where the work needs to be done, and there is no doubt this group will continue to improve as the season progresses.
Most importantly, it’s fantastic to see another group of Rovers juniors stepping up, challenging themselves and continuing their cricketing journey.
There will be plenty of runs scored, wickets taken, catches held (hopefully a few more of those!) and lessons learned along the way.
A massive shout out to our umpire volunteers Kevin and Tim and our scorer Tash and a huge thank you to Mel for providing the afternoon tea. Cricket cannot happen without everyone pitching in!
The Halpin Partners Tier 3 Rovers are up and running for season 2026/27!
Rovers Tier 3 FNQ Nature Tours launched their 2026/27 campaign at the crack of dawn, making the early trek up the Range to the Tablelands to face Atherton Gold.
The squad welcomed Toby, stepping up from Tier 2, Tyson, crossing town for his first appearance in Rovers colours, and new ‘import’ Will J, eager to get his eye in on Aussie soil.
Batting first, Travis (top score of 41) and Tommy walked out and dug in, seeing off the new ball and blunting anything the Atherton quicks threw down. Their partnership laid the perfect platform for Eli, who arrived at first drop and kept the scoreboard ticking over with a strong 21.
Will J then strode out and began finding his rhythm on the lively Aussie deck, continuing to adjust to the bounce and pace on his way to a confident 31. Toby added a valuable 24, Tyson chipped in with 14, and by the time the dust settled, Rovers had posted a competitive 188.
With ball in hand, experienced campaigners Hayden (2–17) and Wil H (2–20) hit their straps from ball one, landing it on a dime and immediately putting Atherton on the back foot. The pressure stayed on through good bowling and sharp ground fielding. Caleb (1–20), Travis (1–17) and Wil J (2–22) all chimed in, keeping the wickets column moving and ensuring Atherton were constantly under pressure with their chase.
When Hayden and Will returned for their second spells, they turned the screws even tighter, bowling the kind of disciplined overs that make run chases feel twice as hard, and in the end, the total proved too much.
Awards went to our debutants, Will J, Tyson and Toby, as well as Rocco, who helped us out, ensuring we had a full complement of players.
A top first outing for Rovers — plenty of positives, plenty of grit, and still loads of development ahead.
Tier 2. WGC Rovers Redbacks 7-168 v Zaffy Redbacks 8-153. A great start to the tier 2 season with a hard fought match played in great spirits between the 2 green machines.
Isaak Blake 33* and Cooper Halley 17* shot the Zaffy’s out of the blocks before some great catching – including 2 rippers from Andrew Leroy – brought the Redbacks into the game. Ryan Tabuai snared 2-14 as the Zaffy’s posted a very competitive 153.
In their chase Redbacks skipper Riley Brown stood tall with a well composed 27 whilst both Oliver Collins (2-13) and Cooper Halley (2-17) bowled with some real venom.
The Redbacks middle order knuckled down (Jacob Dutton 25* and Max Le Previst 25) and just outlasted a spirited late comeback from the Zaffy’s.
It was a great showing from both teams with plenty of positive signs for the season ahead.
The future of the club was on display today with debutants on both teams doing the club proud.
AGL batted first, Herbert smashing boundaries for fun on his way to 19, after double figure contributions at the top from Henry and Emmett, and James protecting his wicket with rock solid defence. Johno and Brianna picket up a wicket each, with Oscar nailing two runouts.
ABC’s turn to bat, Bradley amassing 33, and Brianna, Aaron, and Oscar all reaching 20+, and Kiani producing one of her best efforts with the bat.
Hendrix picked up the teams first wicket, and Mahish grabbed 2 wickets and and early contender for catch of the season.
ABC awards went to Brianna for a great all round performance, and Liesel for showing courage on debut.
A great start to the season with plenty of positives for both teams.
Tier 1 Westpac Rovers grabbed their first excellent T20 win by 8 runs over Norths to begin their 26-27 season. 8/128 vs 5/136.
Rnd 1 captain Xander lead with both experience and skill taking 3/9 off 2 overs after keeping for the first 10 including an excellent stumping, followed by 25 runs off 18 balls with four boundaries. His sister Arkie took 2 wickets in her first over and backed it up with 9 runs in a super effort for a first gamer. Hudson took 1/6 off 3 and opened the batting with an unbeaten 26 runs including three 4s. Ollies bowling was also impressive taking 1/21 off 4 in an economical spell.
Damondeep may have taken catch of the year in round 1 with a diving c&b that excited the whole team and the crowd as well. Campbell opened the bowling with 0/6 off 2 showing he is going to be a very reliable and effective quick bowler for the team. Alexander worked hard on his consistency with 0/19 off 3. Awards to Xander, Arkie, Hudson and Ollie.
Fun was had by all and it looks like it will a great season ahead.
A big congratulations to Rovers boys Carter and Hugh, who are down in Canberra representing Queensland in hockey!
These talented young sportsmen are showing off their skills in both cricket and hockey.
Well done, boys! The Rovers family is proud of you both!
