SGS Rovers Bowling first, Blake was unlucky not to have a wicket on the first ball of the game and Pranil again bowled well without luck from the other end. Apart from Shivvys outstanding run out(throwing down the stumps from side on 25 metres out), drop catches, bowling extras and misfielding was the order of the day. Rovers Halpin finished with 196 off their alloted overs and Luca 3/15, Shivvy 1/5 and Blake 1/9 were the best bowlers. Will once again showed his amazing ability with the bat, blasting 68 from 64 balls. Luca 19 and Pranil chipped in, but the SGS boys fell short by 29 runs. The boys will take a lot away from this game. Awards went to Will, Lucas and Jesse.
Another dry and hot Saturday afternoon saw our Rovers team play host to the Port Douglas Muddies. We lost the toss and, unfortunately, were forced to field in difficult conditions. To the boys’ credit, they bowled well, and after Oscar got things going, taking his first of three scalps it was all down hill for the visitors as they were bowled out for 134 in just over 26 overs. Key destroyers were Oscar 3/14 off three overs and Riley 2/1 off 2.1 overs.
After being part of some huge totals over recent weeks, the boys were looking forward to chasing the sub-par score, and they didn’t disappoint with all six top order bats getting 16 runs or more. Eli top scored with a quick fire 31* from 20 balls faced.
We went past the opposition’s score with five wickets in hand in the 18th over at a cracking 7.4 runs per over.
Players of the match were Oscar and Riley, while umpire Gary was also recognised for his efforts over the past 5 matches umpiring 60 overs each weekend.
Rovers Tier 2 Green played Barron River at St Andrew’s on Saturday afternoon. Rovers lost the bat flip and were sent into bat first. Barron put the pressure on early and despite the efforts of Alex I (22), Toby (17) and Caleb (14 n.o.), we were bowled out for 86. In response Rovers bowled tightly and took their chances (including a great outfield catch to Ronan). Before too long, Barron found themselves with only 3 wickets left and still a few runs to get. Rovers ended up bowling Barron out for 108 in a strong fielding effort. Well done to Carter (3/10 off 3.3) and Caleb (2 for 6 off 4) for being the multiple wicket-takers. Award winners this week were Alex I and Carter.
Did someone say road trip? This week, the boys traveled to Innisfail for their first game on turf. After losing the toss, Rovers Gold was sent in to bowl, facing a strong Cassowary Coast top order. One of their openers led the charge, skillfully finding gaps around the field to score an impressive 59. Despite the challenge, our lads held tough, slowing his scoring and containing runs from the other end. With regular wickets falling, we managed to restrict them to 7/130 off their 30 overs.
Bowling highlights included Ned securing his first wicket and finishing with 2/8 off 3 overs, Chad with figures of 2/17—including two stumpings by Rocco—and Ash, who ended with 2/21. Special mention to Finn, who pulled off a brilliant boundary catch to dismiss their big hitter.
Our batting started strong, reaching the first drinks break at 1/48, well on track. However, after the break, the middle and lower order struggled, and we were eventually bowled out for 105. Neil led the scoring with a quick 27 off 19 balls, while Rocco (11* off 30) and Hughie (14 off 22) were the only other players to reach double figures.
As they say, “That which doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” Rovers Gold will be back next week at Endeavour for a much-needed home game—bigger, tougher, stronger, and ready to hang tough!
A huge thank you to Tim for organising the bus, Jo for handling afternoon tea and scoring, and Kevin for stepping in as square leg umpire!
Today Rovers Gold played their first game on a turf pitch at Walker Road. Captain Isaak lost the flip and we were sent into bat. The entire team played well in the new conditions but unfortunately we lost a steady stream of wickets due to some very accurate Mulgrave bowling. Some great efforts with the bat from Johno 15 (again a new high score ) and he hit his first ever boundary with a very sweet cover drive
Isaak 27 finished the innings strongly but we knew we had to bowl and field well to win this one. Despite our best efforts Mulgrave managed to chase us down in a tight finish. Brianna, Brad and Cooper L all outstanding with the ball giving away less than 4 runs an over. Lots of lessons learned today including that we have now discovered Cooper H is an outstanding wicket keeper .
Awards went to Johno for his consistent performance and Cooper H for his keeping performance.
For the second time in a week the green machine took on the Redbacks in an all rovers clash. This week it was a very tight affair coming down to the last ball!
Rovers red batted first and Morgun and Jackson got off to a solid start. Shenuka came in at no. 3 and played his best innings so far on his way to 24. Jacob (17) and Aadit (20) also made useful contributions as the Redbacks showed HUGE improvement from last week. For the green, Luca, Liam and Ben all took wickets.
When it was green’s turn to bat some early wickets saw them in trouble but they roared to life in the later overs as Luka (30), Ben (21) and Liam (31) all made great contributions. For red Jacob got 4 wickets, Shenuka 2 and Dexter 2.
When all was said and done green had just pipped red on the final ball but as always that was only an after thought – more importantly a fun morning was had by all rovers – and plenty of improvement is being made by all our great tier 1 players!
The mighty 2’s are eyeing a top of the table clash with the undefeated Port Douglas after a dominant win over Mulgrave Punjabi’s.
Asked to field and short on bowlers, our three “junior” quicks stepped up bowling with accuracy and consistency beyond their years. Ian (3 for 27) Archie (3 for 19) and Tadhg (2 for 33) kept a steady stream of wickets coming, at one stage reducing the Punjabi’s to 9/88. Some lusty last wickets blows eventually saw them reach 142.
In reply we were never troubled. Dutto “i have to go to a dance concert” was promoted to open with Dayne (72no), with a quick start resulting.
Dev (45no) joined Dayne at 2/50 and other than the numerous LBW appeals, they never looked troubled (much to Will’s disapointment). The win coming with more than 10 overs to spare.
Mulgrave won the toss and sent us into bat. Our high scorers of the day being our father and son duo with Archie 44 of 77 and Pete 39 off 69 there bowlers were just too good and unfortunately had us all bowled out on 9/146.Then our turn to bowl Justin getting 3 wickets and Blake taking a wicket there batters just too good they made 4/147 to win the game. Although we didn’t get the win today we all stuck together and played well as team, with our Player of the day going to Lochie Hodge for some great bowling.
