TIER 3 – Super Global Services Rovers (7-215) v Cassowary Coast (2-218)
Batting first on a flat deck and blistering fast outfield Rovers posted a huge total of 215. Will Palmer was outstanding, with an Adam Gilchrist like innings of 100 not out off 70 balls, including 10 fours and 3 towering sixes. No car was safe in the carpark as Will went to work tearing the bowling attack apart. Blake Watson chipped in with 39 and Lachlan Hodge 29. Pranil and Blake started the bowling innings tightly, but some indecision in the outfield leaving high balls untouched was costly and Cassowary Coast was able to reach the target off the last ball of the game. Another very closely contested loss for the boys, but plenty of positives to take away as we look forward to next week’s game. Will Palmer deservedly best on ground with Blake picking up the all-rounder award and Pranil best bowling award with a tight spell of bowling.
TIER 3 – Halpin Partners Rovers (3-212) v Mulgrave (113)
2 from 2 we won the toss and decided to bat. Setting ourself a goal of 5 an over we have outdone ourselves with setting Mulgrave a target of 7 runs an over trying to match our 212 runs. Our top order went to work with Cody Peters scoring 96 Ian de Lange 33 and Tadhg Mcdavitt 28 runs.
In the field everyone gave it all. Wickets went to Hayden Bromell 3, Liam Komura 2 and our work horse who never gives up, Max Costello got 2.
At times our new players to T3 found bowling tough and it was so great to see senior players like Cody and Ian getting behind them and giving them that encouragement and support. Big shout out to Ben Wheeler who was amazing behind the stumps. He has given his bowlers that confidence to go ballistic knowing that he has their back. Also thanks to Kelly for morning tea, Sanet for scoring and Wheels senior for umpiring.
Our award winners were Cody for his 96, Jett for his outstanding fielding and Hayden for his excellent bowling.
TIER 2 – Rovers Red (4-162) v Mulgrave Red (3-161)
After losing the toss and fielding, we knew we’d be in for a big chase with such a lightning fast field.
As expected, Mulgrave got off to a flyer, but with some tight bowling and crisp fielding late in the innings, Mulgrave were restricted to a total of 161 from their 30 overs.
A win here today would require the biggest run chase my boys have ever pulled off.
In the beginning, the game plan was simple. Bat long. Get your retirement. Take the game deep. That’s just what the boys did as one after the other the players retired, and when we required just under 50 from the last 10 overs with five wickets in hand, we knew it was game on.
Eli came back in with 7 overs to go and picked up where he left off and very quickly finished the game off scoring 45* (38) including seven fours and a six and earning himself player of the match.
Other contributions with the bat came from Riley 21* (26), Oscar 16* (25), Tommy 13 (17), and Kaden 10* (20). Bowling honours went to Eli 1/10, Zac 1/21, and Cooper 0/4.
Big thanks to Oscar’s family for supplying a scrumptious afternoon tea and all the other parents who helped out scoring, umpiring, and warming the boys up.
TIER 2 – Rovers Gold (5-182) v Atherton (8-90)
Our team showed great spirit and determination this week, as the Rovers Gold top order truly came of age. After being sent in to bat, we saw an exceptional team effort, with five of the top six batters retiring after solid contributions. It was fantastic to see everyone playing their part.
The standout performances with the bat came from Hughie, who was in fine form, scoring 44* off 30 balls, and Rocco, who made a composed 28* off 32 balls. Special mentions also go to Bikram (19), Ashton (18), and Neil, who chipped in with a quick-fire 19 off just 10 balls towards the end of the innings.
Defending 182, the boys bowled with discipline and focus. Atherton’s opening pair proved resilient, but our bowlers kept them well contained, making runs hard to come by. Wickets fell regularly, with Chad leading the way, taking 3/7. Elijah was also impressive with 2/11, while Finn (1/3) and Hugh (1/9) provided excellent support.
The fielding was outstanding, with Elijah taking two brilliant catches, including a sensational caught and bowled.
Overall, it was a superb team win for Rovers Gold. Hugh’s brilliant batting earned him the player of the day award, while Chad’s late burst of wickets saw him deservedly share in the accolades.
Well done, team! Let’s keep this momentum going into the next match.
TIER 2 – Rovers Green (8-160) v Mulgrave Blue (191)
John Margiotta had the pleasure of guiding the Tier 2 Green team this week. Although it was a loss to Mulgrave I was pleased with the team’s performance after having the bye last week. We were down on players and recruited some excellent Tier one players who were outstanding. We also called on some more experienced players in Max Costello who captained and Sean Morris who played a vital role with the ball. We were set 192 to chase after bowling an under manned Mulgrave side out inside of 30 overs, our fielding and bowling were on point. Sam Costello was miserly with 4 overs for 6 runs, he was well supported by Sean Morris who got 1 for 30 off his 4 overs.
Big brother Max Costello led the way with his 4 overs taking 1 for 12 with a maiden over in there. Joash Bibin and Tobias Margetts held the middle overs together taking a wicket each. Andrew Leroy was impressive but bowled without luck, he’s definitely a player to watch! Alex Milner who bowled well is a young up and comer who will grow into a wicket taking seamer of the future, he also worked hard for the team!
A young, tall Alex Ireland lead the way bowling 3.3 overs 2 wickets for 20. Alex was a key bowler for us in this match. Max was key with the bat for us scoring 68 not out off 45 balls, this put us in a competitive position but we fell short only scoring 160. Our other batsmen were all very impressive and played with maturity following a game plan that the team devised themselves. I was greatly supported by some outstanding parents! Well done team.
TIER 1 – Rovers Gold (131) v Mulgrave Igenia (91)
Captain Kitty won the toss and elected to bowl first. The green machine picked up a steady stream of wickets with Brianna leading the way with the outstanding figures of 3 for 9 off 3 overs. Cooper L also outstanding with 3 wickets while Brad and Izaack picked up 2 each.
A steady start to the run chase where we stayed on track with our big hitters, Cooper H, Brad, Cooper L and Izaack bringing it home. The only controversy in the match, when one of our own may have ran out one of our own and possibly his own sibling (no names will be mentioned 😜) while filling in for the opposition but great sportsmanship shown. Looking forward to next week.
Award winners Brianna, Brad and Cooper H.
TIER 1 – Rovers Red (162) v Barron Blue (88)
Captain Shinjuka won the toss and sent Barron into bat. We bowled steadily in the early overs and fielded well. Bronte came on to bowl and the wickets started to tumble as she took advantage of the bouncy pitch. We picked up 8 wickets in the Barron innings including great catches from wicketkeepers Aadit and Ryan. Bronte finished with 4 for 12.
Ryan (25) signalled his intent by hitting the first ball of our innings for 6! Dexter hit his first boundary in a cricket game and Aadit (34) and Jacob (21) finished our innings with a flurry of boundaries against our tiring opponents. Our awards this week went to Aadit and Bronte.
A great morning for the mighty Redbacks (team vote as to a new name due next week!)
TIER 1 – Rovers Green v Norths Gold
Norths elected to bat. It was strong bowling effort with most players picking up wickets. The side was expertly captained by young Josh, with great intensity and positively shown. In heat conditions which resembled playing in downtown Dubai, the Rovers Green side battled hard and kept Norths to a very modest total.
It was decided to send in the side’s young Tasmanian Devil Fred to open with Captain Josh. The boys faced a fearsome attack and toiled really well. Luca and Charlie then consolidated the innings with some amazing batting. Young Ollie and Rueben supported, demonstrating strong technique, focus and batting discipline. Our batting effort was rounded off by talented tier 1 veterans Liam and Ben.
The boys toiled right to the last ball. I am not sure who won the cricket however team unity, sportsmanship and friendship in my eyes won the day.
Special mention goes our match award recipients Josh and Charlie.
1st Grade – No Game this week due to rep weekend
2nd Grade – Red Beret Hotel Rovers (7-149) v Mulgrave (8-145)
Mulgrave won the toss and elected to bat on a perfect Sunday afternoon at GP1. Sauce (2-24) chiselled out an important wicket after a solid early partnership from the toads. Everyone’s favourite lettuce, Kael, channelled his inner Alex Carey to secure a crucial, but controversial stumping as the wandering toad captain was sent packing. At 2-80 at drinks Mulgrave were well placed to set us a challenging total but the Thresh (2-30) stepped up again and the spinners bogged Mulgrave down such that we were set a competitive though gettable 146 for victory.
Some early wickets saw us in trouble at 4-34. Then Chaddy (22) and SykesE (38) combined for a crucial 5th wicket partnership to steer the game in our direction. Joel launching a customary air-raid on Mulgrave hapless spinners. A couple of wickets kept it interesting but a satisfying and successful run chase was concluded in favour of three green in the 29th over.
No premiership hangover seems evidence as the mighty 2s went 2 and 0 to start the season.
3rd Grade – FGF Rovers (8-219) v Mulgrave (5-174)
Mulgrave won the toss and sent us in to bat. Despite losing a couple of early wickets, Marty and Archie steadied the ship with a fantastic partnership. Marty retired after smashing 71 off 45 balls, while Archie contributed a solid 73 off 77. Cooper added a valuable 29 not out off 29 balls, helping us reach a competitive total of 8/219.
When it was our turn to bowl, the boys delivered an outstanding performance with great bowling and tight fielding, restricting Mulgrave to just 5/174. Ian, Cody, Ben, Marty, and Archie each took a wicket, contributing to a strong team effort that secured our first win of the season.
A big congratulations to Archie, who was named Player of the Day for his all-round performance!
3rd Grade – Bhutanese Rovers (7-224) v Mareeba (199)
The Bhutanese Rover set a competitive total of 224 runs against Mareeba and ultimately emerged victorious. Dibas and Denjom laid a solid foundation, with Dibas scoring 57 runs off 76 balls and Denjom contributing 37 runs from 32 balls. Bishal was the standout performer with 70 runs from 59 balls, while Sanjay added 23 runs. The fielding was commendable, highlighted by a crucial run-out from Madan. On the bowling front, Arfan Kabbo took 2 wickets for 14 runs, and Bishal also claimed 2 wickets for 34 runs, sealing a great match for the team.
